Maya Vander Opens Up About Grieving the Stillbirth of Her Son
On December 10, 2021, "Selling Sunset" star Maya Vander shared the devastating news that she had suffered a pregnancy loss just two weeks before the due date of her son, Mason.
"Yesterday was the hardest day of my life. I had a stillbirth at 38 weeks," she wrote on Instagram. "I always heard of it but never imagined I'll be part of the statistics. Instead of delivering a baby, I get to go home with a memory box."
Vander, who is mother to son Aiden, 2, and daughter Elle, 19 months, has discussed her pregnancies on "Selling Sunset," with her most recent one being featured in season 4 of the Netflix original series. "Given I share my pregnancies in the show I knew I'll have to post about this and avoid the 'when is your due date' question," she stated.
Vander has received an outpouring of support from viewers. "People know my pregnancy because of the show, so a lot of women reach out to me. They send me emails. They share their stories."
Hearing from women with similar experiences has helped her navigate her grief, Vander said.
"For me personally, it helps me with other women who experienced what I have and who intimately understand the pain—the painful situation—because no one prepares for something like that," she told E! in an exclusive interview.
"I was so ready for a third kid," Vander said in the interview, adding that hearing others' stories of successful pregnancies after a stillbirth has been encouraging. "That's something that I would really like to have—I really would like to have another baby and have a nice sweet experience at the end."
