Does Omeprazole Help Celiac Disease?
Although omeprazole is not a treatment for celiac disease itself, as the disease requires a strict gluten-free diet to manage symptoms and prevent long-term complications, Omeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor commonly used to reduce stomach acid production, may be prescribed to patients with celiac disease to help manage gastrointestinal symptoms such as acid reflux or heartburn, which can accompany celiac disease. However, it does not treat the underlying cause of celiac disease nor prevent damage to the small intestine that occurs from ingesting gluten. Therefore, while omeprazole can be beneficial for symptomatic relief of associated acid-related symptoms in some patients with celiac disease, adherence to a gluten-free diet remains the cornerstone of effective management.
