Ejaculating Too Soon? Try a Different Position
Do you struggle with showing up a little early for the party?
Premature ejaculation (PE) is frustrating and can take a heavy toll on a man’s self-esteem and sex life. A number of treatment options are available, but for some guys, just giving a little thought to positioning may be all it takes to slow things down and ensure you’re right on time.
What is premature ejaculation?
Premature ejaculation is a medical condition in which a man ejaculates earlier than he intends, with no ability to control what’s happening and often after minimal stimulation.
As many as 33 percent of men ages 18 to 59 experience PE at some point. The reason is often psychological, including stress, depression, lack of self-confidence, anxiety about sexual performance and relationship problems. In some cases, the cause could be physical, as a result of aging, inflammation of the prostate or urethra, or even a spinal cord injury. PE can also be caused by erectile dysfunction (ED), in which case, talk to your doctor about first treating ED, as your premature ejaculation might be fixed in tandem.
For many men, frequent struggles with PE can cause stress, guilt, embarrassment and frustration, and negatively impact relationships. And, obviously, problems conceiving can arise if a man has ejaculated before intercourse has started.
How to address PE & last longer
The first step is to talk to your doctor. Be open and honest, and don’t be embarrassed; doctors have heard it all before. Treatment options include pelvic floor exercises, the start-stop method or the squeeze technique, and these techniques have been successful for 60 to 90 percent of patients.
Certain medications can delay orgasm, as can condoms and topical numbing creams that reduce sensation. Counseling and alternative stress-reducing therapies may also be beneficial for premature ejaculation caused by psychological issues.
On a more pleasant note, sex itself can be a treatment, and strategically choosing certain positions can help a man last longer.
Positions to help you last longer
These five positions help guys last longer by reducing the depth at which they penetrate a partner, and/or limiting their ability to pelvic thrust:
Partner on top. Lie on your back and have your partner lower themselves down onto you. They’ll have all the control and can lean forward to reduce the depth of penetration even farther.
Spooning. Lie on your side with your partner in front, their back toward you. When you penetrate from behind, the angle and position reduce sensation and depth of penetration.
Give oral sex. This may be obvious, but going down on your partner is a great way to speed things up for them and slow them down for you.
Bend and press. While your partner is on their back, they bend their knees to plant their feet on your chest. You may want to prop their butt up with pillows. While you’re thrusting, they’ll be able to slow you down by pushing against your chest with their feet. This position is definitely for the more flexible among us.
Seated lap dance. Sit down on a chair with your butt toward the edge. Your partner sits down on top of you, thus controlling the speed and depth of penetration.
One last pro tip is to avoid doggy style. This is typically one of the positions that get guys to orgasm the fastest and is therefore unlikely to be your friend in this situation.
Premature ejaculation is a stressful issue, but you’ll be glad to hear that 95 percent of men recover. With open communication and a willing partner, you should be able to kick PE to the curb—and a little repositioning just might help you do that.
