Easy Ways to Feng Shui Your Bedroom for Better Sex
Feng shui isn't just some trend for celebrities and billionaires. If you're feeling stuck in your love life, it might be something to seriously consider.
Put simply, feng shui is the practice of arranging items and pieces of furniture in living spaces to increase the flow of energy. Proponents will tell you bringing feng shui principles into your bedroom is vital for a juicy love life, attracting a partner and helping you get over an ex.
No, really, what is feng shui?
Feng shui is the ancient Chinese philosophy of creating harmony between yourself and the environment. Specifically, it's the practice of balancing the five elements—wood, fire, earth, metal and water—with each of the eight energetic life areas, or Bagua.
"Feng shui is about creating environments with specific energy to support activities, whether it be a living room to relax in or creating sexual tension in a bedroom," explained Maegan Bacur, designer, writer and editor-in-chief of the Rhythm of the Home project.
The Bagua that corresponds to sex, love and relationships is called the Kun-gua. It's represented by the Yin earth element, pink colors, flat and square shapes and the numeral 2.
Everything's better in pairs
One easy way to use feng shui in your bedroom is to ditch singular objects. Having pairs of important furniture helps balance the energy of each partner if you're in a couple and welcomes in new love if you're single.
"It's helpful to have a bed with a nightstand on each side, one for each partner," said Anjie Cho, interior architect and feng shui designer based in New York City. "You don't have to have a pair of everything, but having some things in pairs sends the right signals."
"Keep things in pairs to show exactly what you are trying to attract," added Isabelle Uren, a certified sex expert and the writer and site manager of BedBible, based in Denmark. "Think matching bedside tables, matching pairs of decorations or even a matching pair of sex toys."
Choose the right colors
Most experts recommend bringing in colors such as pale pink or red to make your bedroom more sensual.
"The fire element colors of red, purple, yellow and orange can be included in bedrooms to generate sexual energy as well as a feeling of warmth," Bacur said.
"Red is a great color because it's related to passion and fire energy, so it's connected to sexual wellness," Cho said. "It doesn't mean your whole bedroom needs to be red, but you can bring in red accents like red pillows, red pajamas, red sheets or red artwork."
Cho also suggested utilizing the color purple because it relates to your confidence and self-worth, and pink because it relates to your sexual organs.
Work with the earth element
You may find the classic overhead mirror in a hotel, but designers say it doesn't belong in your own bedroom.
"Cold, sharp or metallic objects like glass, cactus or metal should be avoided, especially over the head of the couple's bed," said Ruiz Asri, editor of Honest Home Talks, based in Malaysia.
Instead, focus on the earth element, which represents the energetic life areas of health and love and can help you feel more grounded in your relationships.
"As well as decorative items, such as salt rock lamps, there are some amazing sex toys made from natural materials that can increase the earth energy in your bedroom," Uren said.
She suggested keeping a pair of tumbled pieces of the "crystal of love," rose quartz. The crystal is believed to open the heart chakra, a point of physical or spiritual energy in the body. You can add other elements from the earth such as stones, crystals or pottery.
Cho suggested a square or rectangular rug to add stability, self-care and support.
Experiment with sensual shapes
Kun-gua is represented by flat and square shapes, but it never hurts to stray from tradition when it's appropriate.
"Smooth curves usher in romantic vibes," Uren explained. "A sex chaise lounge is great for inspiring some more adventurous sex positions."
Plus, most sex loungers can blend in as regular furniture so you can keep them out in the open. If you want something more accessible and affordable, Uren recommended a wedge sex pillow to help you get the right angles in trickier positions.
Get moving
The bed is where the magic happens, so make sure it's in the optimal location in your bedroom. Experts say the bed should be in "the commanding position," or where you can see the door or entrance to the bedroom but are not directly in front of it—kind of at a diagonal.
The headboard should be placed securely against the wall, but the walls shouldn't block the left and right sides of the bed.
"Have your bed arranged so there's space for each person to get into the bed easily," Cho added.
This arrangement signals to the other person that you're open to a relationship and lets the energy flow openly around both of you.
Even if you don't believe in feng shui, applying these principles to your love nest can help you set the mood. No matter if you're single or in a relationship, it never hurts to make your bedroom feel more sensual.
