College Basketball Player Lands Underwear Deal After Testicle Injury
A college athlete landed an underwear deal after going viral with a post about his twisted testicle.
To land said deal, however, Clemson basketball player Brevin Galloway, 25, had to learn about testicular torsion the hard way.
Galloway posted a video story to his Instagram account in late January describing the event. The Tigers guard said he woke up in pain from a post-workout nap to find his "balls and nut sack were exploded," according to the post. Galloway joked in his video that his testicles "were trying to be like basketballs."
The college senior later posted a definition of testicular torsion to Instagram before tweeting, "IDK what happened today but it was the worst pain I've ever experienced…We good though."
What is testicular torsion?
Testicular torsion happens when a testicle, found in the scrotum under the penis, rotates and twists the spermatic cord, effectively cutting off its blood supply. If not corrected quickly, the damaged testicle may have to be surgically removed.
Symptoms of testicular torsion may include severe and sudden testicle pain, nausea, a change in scrotum color, vomiting, swelling and fever.
Galloway's medical diagnosis is uncommon. About 1 in 4,000 men younger than age 25 develop testicular torsion, according to the Urology Care Foundation.
The series of unfortunate events had a seemingly happy ending, at least, when Galloway signed a name, image and likeness (NIL) deal with clothing brand Shinesty, a men's underwear company, for an undisclosed amount.
Galloway is recovering following his emergency surgery, according to a Shinesty news release. The company said Galloway was informed by his doctor that the injury occurred "because (he) was most likely wearing loose boxers."
The words "loose boxers'' caught the attention of folks at Shinesty.
"When we heard about Brevin's nightmarish outcome, we knew we had just the solution so this never happens to him again," said Ben Lauderdale, Shinesty's creative director, in the release.
Shinesty's underwear line, including Ball Hammock, claims to feature a proprietary pouch to keep "balls safe, secure and out of harm's way," according to the release.
"There's always a great opportunity for an endorsement deal when a rising athlete 'explodes' onto the scene," Lauderdale added, vowing to keep Galloway's "babymakers" safe for the rest of the season. "Our company has a passion for testicular comfort and scrotal safety. It just makes sense to partner with a set of balls in need."
The company is providing Galloway with enough underwear to last through the rest of his college career. He is expected to make a full recovery and return to the court sometime in February, the release stated.
"Now I can focus on dropping 3's since I know Ball Hammocks won't drop my 2's," Galloway said in the release.
